OMIYAGE

In Japanese, the word “omiyage” means “souvenir”.

I heard from a gallerist that customs duties may be imposed if the works are shipped overseas. This is my first exhibition in a foreign country, and so, I was puzzled because Ididn’t know anything about these customs duties. However, she told me that she thinks my works look like “gifts”.

Certainly, many of my works are small. Flowers, cards, and other things which are reminiscent of gifts. In that case, I decided to make the theme of this exhibition about souvenirs from Japan.

I made small origami boxes with chiyogami that carry small works inside. Chiyogami is Japanese paper. I really like this material and I think it’s very Japanese, so it’s perfect as a souvenir.

Even if a customs official asks me, I can say that this is, “Omiyage”.(I just have to keep this text out of sight of customs.)

And another work I would like to ask for your cooperation.
This is a past work, a tablecloth named Tulips in the Desert.
Please write your name on it with a magic marker wherever you like.

I have always admired signature tablecloths. I would like to take home your signed tablecloth as a souvenir from the U.K.

I would be happy if we could exchange “OMIYAGE” between Japan and the U.K.
